About

Hello! My name is Elaine,
I am a rheumatologist currently based in Sydney.
How can I help?
As a rheumatologist, I specialise in the diagnosis and treatment of autoimmune, inflammatory and musculoskeletal conditions. These include:
- Arthritis, such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, osteoarthritis
- Spondyloarthritis, such as Ankylosing Spondylitis
- Gout and pseudo-gout (calcium pyrophosphate deposition disease)
- Connective Tissue Diseases, such as
- Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE)
- Sjorgren’s Syndrome
- Systemic Sclerosis/Scleroderma
- Myositis – dermatomyositis, anti-synthetase syndrome
- Osteoporosis
- Other musculoskeletal conditions such as tendinitis, bursitis, fibromyalgia
- Other inflammatory conditions such as vasculitis, polymyalgia rheumatica
I also perform specialised bedside tests, such as nailfold capillaroscopy, as well as joint, bursa and tendon sheath injections. I am learning to use musculoskeletal ultrasound in my bedside clinical assessments.
As a compassionate and caring physician, I will work with you and your other healthcare providers to develop a holistic treatment plan, to help improve pain and quality of life.
Where did I train?
I’m a proud graduate of the UNSW Wagga Wagga Rural Clinical School. After finishing internship and residency at Wagga Wagga Base Hospital and St Vincent’s Hospital Sydney, I undertook Basic Physician Training with the Royal Prince Alfred Hospital Network.
I completed my Rheumatology Advanced Training in several sites, including Concord Repatriation General Hospital, Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, Liverpool Hospital and BJC Health (Parramatta and Chatswood).
The learning never stops though, as rheumatology is a rapidly evolving specialty. I keep up-to-date with the latest research by regularly attending hospital meetings, national and international conferences, in order to provide you with evidence-based care.
My Qualifications
- Bachelor of Medical Studies/Doctor of Medicine – UNSW
- Master of Medicine (Internal Medicine) – University of Sydney
My Affiliations
- Royal Australasian College of Physicians
- Australian Rheumatology Association
- Australian Medical Association
What else do I do?
I currently hold a locum staff specialist position at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital, where I participate in the on-call roster and outpatient services.
My other interests lie within patient and medical education!
- My goal is to improve educational resources, for patients, with patients. With experience in digital illustration and co-design, I’m working with both patients and practitioners to create information sheets on common rheumatology conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis.
- I hold conjoint associate lecturer appointments at University of Sydney and UNSW, where I teach medical students key clinical skills such as history taking and bedside examination.
What to do before your first appointment
Many patients wait to see a rheumatologist, either because they’ve had pain that hasn’t gone away, or they’ve had uncertainty with their blood tests. As such, patients often feel anxious before their first rheumatology appointment.
With BJC Health, I created this infographic for new patients coming in for their initial appointment. Please watch and share the video with anyone who might be interested!
